Neil, the d**ned thing would have to be MILES wide at the top. Bogus! Too many mega-tons of cable would be needed. Shame on you for pseudoscience!

Just a thought: to build this you have a space station 22.000 miles/36.000 km above Earth lowering the cable. So... at a point this cable will be in the gravity field of the Earth. Let's say the tip of the cable is about 20km above Earth, so you have a space station with 35.980km of cable of which a lot of cable is pulled by gravity. Wouldn't the space station need a boost to escape this gravity and keep geostationary or not?

@CZKing Did you realize that where ever you are on Earth, you only see one face of the moon? That means it is possible to connect the two planets for a few minutes... This is why the stations have to be set up all across the world at different time lengths to make up for the shortness of the time it is connected. Moreover, there's always the alternative of using a space shuttle (which is more practical).

Also, this solution takes care of the "burning atmosphere" and the problem of the Space Elevator toppling under the gravitational force from the Earth. To make the Elevator safer, we have to cover the nano-tubes with an insulator to decrease the magnetic and electric influence on the carbon chain links. Another maybe is to have a mini Space Elevator from various spots on the Earth that is as high as the Space Elevator entrance bay so that at different times of the year, the two will connect. |
